Mrs. Vironda’s second grade class has been very busy in Science this year. We are learning about different objects and their properties. We have learned that some objects can have the same properties. In small groups, students were given ten different objects that they had to classify based on their properties. They described their items as being smooth, hard, see through, bendable, breakable, or rough to name a few. After that, students worked cooperatively to decide how to sort their items into two groups based on the properties of the item. Some chose to sort their items into groups such as: hard and soft, bendable and not bendable, or rough and smooth. Together as a group, they decided which items fit together so that way all items in the group had a similar property. When you sort things into groups, you are acting like a scientist and that’s the goal in our room!
