We love finding new, fun ways to increase engagement and learning in Mrs. Forkal and Mrs. Ledvina’s third grade classroom! Our new favorite is Topple Blocks! The students absolutely LOVE it! Topple Blocks are colored jenga blocks that can be used with any skill. We recently used them in reading to practice “Cause and Effect”.
Here are the basics of the game:
Students are put into groups of 3-4 people. Each group gets a recording sheet and a colored Jenga game set.
One student pulls a color from their tower and places it on top. Then, they find that color on their recording sheet and answer one of the questions to correspond with that color.
Even though only one person pulls a block each turn, ALL of the students MUST answer EACH question. They have to confer with each other and agree on an answer. If they disagree, they work together to find any errors that had been made and solve the problem correctly.
Finally, I have to check their answer before they can earn the points for that color.
If their tower falls, they lose 30 points.
The students had great collaborative conversations and worked great as a team!! They cannot wait to play it again with different reading and math skills!
